Collaborative Programmes

Dr. K M Aboobacker, our founder, had always envisioned extending the mission CIGI undertook in Kerala, to different parts of the country. We collaborate with several like-minded organisations around the nation to spread our mission. Kerala is the state with the highest literacy rate in India and thus the responsibility falls on us as a state to spread light to other parts of the country especially the far away rural heartlands. Therefore, it is indeed necessary to opt for a much inclusive method taking into consideration those regions that are still living in darkness.

Centre for Collaborative Social Work (CCSW) is our arm to extend support to disadvantaged communities in othe r parts of the country. Mission Kishanganj in association with Prayaan Foundation was the first step that we took in this direction by adopting a Panchayath named Majgama in Kishanganj of Bihar, which is one of the most backward districts in the country. Lakshadweep Education Programme is another initiative that we carry under CCSW to educationally empower the island people who are listed as Scheduled Tribes.

In the 25th year of our establishment, CIGI has launched ROPE (Reach Out Plan for Excellence) as an outreach mission of CIGI in the North East states. As a part of the plan, we have collaborated with the Prayaan Foundation to establish 5 centres of educational guidance in some of the neediest regions of the country namely, Berhampur (West Bengal), Rampur (Assam), Patna and Kishanganj (Bihar), with the aim of replicating the activities of CIGI in Kerala.

Research and Publications

Though we try our best to reach out to those in need, to spread our service to every nook and corner of the country with an intention to clear all barriers that prevent young talented minds from participating in effective social construction, there might still be issues that we failed to address. But our research team is in constant motion to discover and deal with such issues for the betterment of society.

CIGI is actively engaged in social research, and this has resulted in several studies and publications. Our publication division has brought out several socially relevant studies and books to the general public, many of which are being quoted by researchers and students.

Orphan and Widow Empowerment

CIGI is an organization that aims at spreading its service to all spheres of society including the ones hitherto neglected by mainstream establishments. We have special communities designed to facilitate empowerment of a variety of strata in the wide social structure. In addition to providing assistance to marginalized communities, CIGI further stretches out its helping hands to orphan students and their mothers in terms of both educational and psychological support. We have special projects designed for deserving people with lack of familial support.

Students Training for Excellence in Performance (STEP) is one among such specially designed projects particularly meant for talented orphan students. Through this project, we impart rigorous training to students residing in orphanages, through a wide variety of programmes, equipping them to be better individuals and to achieve remarkable success. Many STEP alumni have achieved glorious feet in their life and they stand as a testimony to the effectiveness of this project. Over the years STEP was able to mentor several hundreds of orphan students who were residents of orphanages across the state.

Supportive Active Foster Assistance (SAFA) is yet another project to empower orphans and their mothers into self sufficient family units. Our novel model of home-based foster care has received recognition from every nook and corner. The well-established system of assistance is designed not only to support the children in education, but also enable their mothers to obtain vocational training and become self-reliant. Our team also encourages them to join in continuing- education programmes.

The project is run with the help of trained fellows chosen by CIGI, who connect with the families directly. Currently SAFA is active in 6 locations where several families live together.
