❓Hello sir, I'm PG Psychology from IGNOU India. I opted counselling psychology in 2nd year of my Master's degree..Now I need guidance whether I choose M.phil or PhD to be part of Mental health care or in a hospital. Since my dream to be a doctor remained unfulfilled now I really want to fulfil my dream to work as a counselor psychologist in hospitals. Kindly provide me proper guidance so that I can fulfil my dream..
✅ You can definitely chase your passion and fulfil your dream.
To be a clinical psychologist in India one must obtain two year MPhil(Clinical Psychology) degree after Post graduation (MA/MSc) in psychology with at least one paper in clinical psychology. Subsequently, registration with Rehabitation Council of India(RCI) is a must.
Alternatively, to register as Clinical psychologist, RCI prescribes 4 year PsyD(Doctor of Psychology) course after your PG in psychology. And you can prefix the title Dr to your name after the successful completion of this course.
An MPhil in clinical psychology can have a lateral entry to PsyD course straight in its third year.
Only two institutes in India are permitted to run PsyD course in India at present as per RCI website.
1. Sweekar Academy of Rehabilitation Sciences, Secunderabad.
2. Amity University, Noida.
Those who are interested in practicing as independent clinical psychologist take up MPhil or PsyD whereas people who wish to pursue a career in teaching in this field go for PhD, since a doctorate is a must to become an Associate Professor.
One can straight away go for PhD after Post graduation in Psyschology. However please note that a PhD in India is not licensed to practice as a clinical psychologist though they teach the PsyD students!
Hope this will clear your confusion
