To evaluate gems, gemologists rely on a range of scientific tools and machines, including microscopes, refractometers, polarizing filters, and spectroscopes. The effective use of these instruments is a fundamental part of the gemologist's job, as it enables them to thoroughly examine gems and make informed decisions. The skill to operate and analyze the results from these tools is critical for performing the responsibilities of a gemologist.
Gemology encompasses various subjects critical to the identification, cutting, polishing, and appraisal of diamonds and colorstones, including diamond gardening, jewelry design, and diamond sorting, grading, bruting, polishing, and soying. Studying these subjects provides gemologists with a comprehensive understanding of gems and the expertise to evaluate and appreciate their unique qualities and significance.

 Gemology can be pursued after completing 10+2 and graduation. Both short-term and long-term courses are available in this field. It is advisable to check the course accreditation by the American Gemological Society (AGS) before enrolling, as this will greatly enhance your employment prospects.
