CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY COURSES IN INDIA
Clinical Psychology Courses in India
To practice as a clinical psychologist in India, students now require less study time under the updated guidelines from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). The duration of study required after Higher Secondary/Plus Two has been reduced from 7 years to 6 years for registration as a clinical psychologist.
The new guidelines introduce a four-year BSc Psychology (Hons) degree, aligning with the National Education Policy. This degree enables graduates to work as counselling psychologists (mental health professionals).
However, not all arts and science colleges currently offering psychology degrees will be able to offer this new four-year Clinical Psychology (Hons) program. Only institutions that meet the specific facilities and requirements set by the RCI will be permitted to offer the BSc Clinical Psychology (Hons) course.
Students from non-science streams will not be eligible for this course, as a Higher Secondary/Plus Two qualification in science is required for admission.
Upon completing the new four-year BSc Clinical Psychology (Hons) degree, students can pursue a two-year Master of Psychology (MPsy) program at an RCI-recognized institution. This MPsy program replaces the previous MPhil in psychology, which has been fully abolished.
With this new structure, students can become clinical psychologists in six years, saving a year compared to the previous pathway. Previously, the process involved a 3-year undergraduate degree, 2 years for an MPhil, and 2 years for a postgraduate degree, totalling 7 years.
The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) will continue to recognize two other approved courses:
1.One-Year PG Diploma in Clinical Psychology (PGDCP): Formerly known as the Professional Diploma for Clinical Psychology, this course allows graduates to become associate clinical psychologists, though they cannot practice independently.
2.Four-Year Doctor of Psychology (PsyD): This is the highest-level qualification in clinical psychology in India. Graduates of the PsyD program are qualified to supervise research activities in the field.
Currently, only two institutes in the country offer these advanced courses.
Eligibility Criteria:
-PG Diploma in Clinical Psychology (PGDCP): To be eligible, you must have a bachelor's degree with Psychology as the main subject, completed over 4 years or 8 semesters, and achieved at least 60% marks.
-Doctor of Psychology (PsyD): Candidates must have a BSc Psychology (Hons) degree. Those who have completed an MPsy with 65% marks can enter the PsyD program directly in the third year, completing it in two years.
Additionally, graduates of the PGDCP with at least 60% marks on their first attempt are eligible for direct admission into the second year of the PsyD program.
